Acknowledgment of Country
The location of Barunah Plains encompasses both sides of the Warrambine Creek, which acts as the border for the Wadawurrung Peoples of the Kulin Nation and The Eastern Maar peoples of Southwest Victoria. We recognise the deep spiritual connection both nations have with the landscape and pay our deepest respects to their Elders past and present, extending our gratitude for their care of this land. As we gather in musical celebration we ask you to join us in our commitment to walking with care on this sacred land, working alongside Traditional Custodians to honour and protect the ancient songlines which have been stored in the landscape for over 60,000 years.

Welcome To Country
At Beyond the Valley, we proudly support Wadawurrung Traditional Custodians in presenting a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony to open our festival. This tradition introduces visitors to the land and its cultural heritage, inviting everyone to engage respectfully and understand its values, whether they come from other Indigenous nations or non-Indigenous backgrounds. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Wadawurrung peoples for their warm welcome and guidance, which helps us maintain the land’s sacredness and ensures it will be restored to its natural state after the event.
As you enjoy your time on Wadawurrung Country and Eastern Maar Country, please show your respect by attending the Welcome to Country ceremony, walking carefully on this sacred land, and leaving your campsite and the broader Barunah Plains site as you found it. This practice honours the land and its custodians, recognising that sovereignty was never ceded and that this land has always been and will always be under the custodianship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
